Nora presented paper at SCIS

On Monday Nora presented her literature review paper at SCIS 2024 in Uddevalla, Sweden. Nora has studied some of the challenges that organizations face right after they have implemented large software products.

Nora has studied Helseplattformen, a large digitalization initiative in the central Norway region. Helseplattformen received a lot of media attention after “go-live.” It was therefore interesting to see what researchers in the field of information systems have published to this specific phase in digitalization initiatives. Some of the challenges we found are related to the changing role of the vendor, unforeseen changes required to existing practices, and varying institutional conditions.

Title of the paper: Post-implementation Challenges of EHR Systems: A Literature Review of Recent Studies.

Authors: Nora O. Ringdal and Babak A. Farshchian

Abstract:

Existing Electronic Health Record (EHR) research is largely focused on the implementation while the
post-implementation phase remains understudied. However, this phase is no less critical for realizing
the benefits, and healthcare organizations are often uncertain about how to proceed after go-live. A
systematic literature review of qualitative studies was conducted to explore challenges faced by
organizations during the post-implementation phase of EHR systems and identify research areas that
need more attention in future EHR research. We identified 23 articles addressing challenges in this
context. Standardized routines meeting local practices prove to be a key challenge as well as ecosystem
complexity, technical and usability challenges, and institutional conditions. We call for further research
to explore strategies for the post-implementation phase of EHRs.
