Paper title: Digital Transformation Projects and the Challenge of Knowledge Integration in Practice.

Authors: Hamid Mehmood (NTNU), Amany Elbanna (Royal Holloway University of London, now at Univ. Sussex).

Abstract:

Digital transformation (DT) projects demand innovation, future-orientation, and multidisciplinary perspective from the users participating in these projects. Participating users need to integrate knowledge across many boundaries to achieve these demands. In this study, we examine how the knowledge integration of DT participating users’ takes place within traditional participation methods. Through a case study of a large DT project and drawing on Carlile’s knowledge integration framework, the study identifies a contradiction in the trajectories of users’ participation and knowledge integration. It shows that this contradiction when unresolved can impact the success of DT project leading to unsatisfactory outcomes. The study sheds new light on the knowledge demands of digital transformation projects and contributes to practice.
